The Power of the Social Network

Here's an interesting article of how Twitter freed a Grad student from an Egyptian jail. Overall it shows the power of social networking and how one individual's social network on Twitter led other's to tap into their own in order to help the student out. It'll be interesting to see if this type of technology continues to develop as a way to communicate during times of crisis.

Pretty amazing stuff. I think this speaks just as much though to the status of being an American, or from an industrialized Western nation, as it does to being native to a nation in turmoil.

I'll bet if the poor translator was an American, an Englishman, or a French citizen he'd be free right now too.

I’m surprised the police didn’t take his phone away from him, probably just as surprised as he was.

Very interesting story. Really makes me think twice about getting the Internet on my cell phone.

Just to note, you don't need the internet for Twitter, just text messaging. Great example of the power of social media, indeed!
